Former Phoenix radio host Charles Goyette visits with The Dollar Meltdown: Surviving the Impending Currency Crisis with Gold,
Oil, and Other Unconventional Investments, about which Congressman Ron Paul says, “This book truly is a must read.” On the
heels of the most recent economic crisis, America, according to Goyette, is headed toward another: high inflation and dollar devaluation.
Federal debt is compounding while growth has stalled, and America's foreign creditors are questioning the dollar's reserve currency status.
But the good news is that those who are prepared can protect themselves -- and even profit -- in this new era. Drawing on historical
examples and a clear, down-to-earth analysis, Goyette explains the importance of gold, silver, and other alternative investments when
inflation takes off. More info: TheDollarMeltdown.com.

the relative harms and legal status of the two most popular recreational substances in the world -- marijuana and alcohol. Through an
objective examination of the two drugs and the laws and social practices that steer people toward alcohol, the authors pose a simple yet
rarely considered question: Why do we punish adults who make the rational, safer choice to use marijuana instead of alcohol? Tvert is
cofounder and executive director of Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER) and the SAFER Voter Education Fund.

demo, tasting, and booksigning. Scala Quinn has spent much of her life feeding the men and boys in her life, and teaching

food guru -- shares winning strategies for how to sate the seemingly insatiable and get men to manage in the kitchen. She
provides recipes for single-skillet meals and dinners that yield fabulous leftovers. Scala Quinn’s recipes are easy to prepare,
affordable, and so good that even the most finicky eater will want to dig in. Along with her cooking techniques and survival
strategies (“Never be caught without bacon”), Quinn muses about life in a pre-dominantly male household and provides
empowering advice to feed guys’ spirits as well as fill their bellies. With her help, homemade meals become second nature,
nourishing both diner and cook.
MONA LYNCH: SUNBELT JUSTICE 7PM
Mona Lynch, Associate Professor in the Criminology, Law & Society Department at the University of California, Irvine, visits with
her book Sunbelt Justice: Arizona and the Transformation of American Punishment. In the late twentieth century,
the United States experienced an incarceration explosion. Over the course of twenty years, the imprisonment rate quadrupled,
and today more than 1.5 million people are held in state and federal prisons. Arizona’s Department of Corrections came of age
just as this shift toward prison warehousing began, and soon led the pack in using punitive incarceration in response to crime.
Sunbelt Justice looks at the development of Arizona’s punishment politics, policies, and practices, and brings to light just
how and why we have become a mass incarceration nation.
OFFSITE EVENT - PAUL NICKLEN: POLAR OBSESSION 7PM
Renowned nature photographer and wildlife biologist Paul Nicklen, whose work has been published in magazines around the world, including ten articles for National Geographic, presents his book Polar Obsession. The Arctic is in Nicklen’s blood. Born and raised on Baffin Island, Nunavut, he grew up in one of the only non-Inuit families in a tiny native settlement amid the ice fields, floes, and frigid seas of Northern Canada. At an age when most children are playing hide-and-seek, he was learning life-and-death lessons of survival: how to read the weather, find shelter in a frozen snowscape, or live off the land as his Inuit neighbors had done for centuries. Today Nicklen is uniquely qualified to portray the impact of climate change on the polar regions and their inhabitants, human and animal alike. In a wise and wonderful intertwining of art and science, his bold expeditions plunge him into freezing seas to capture unprecedented, up-close documentation of the lives of leopard seals, whales, walruses, polar bears, bearded seals, and narwhals. Bathed in polar light, his images, inspiring and amazing, break new ground in photography and provide a vivid, timely portrait of two extraordinary, endangered ecosystems.

J.A. JANCE: TRIAL BY FIRE 7PM
J.A. Jance visits with her latest, Trial By Fire. In the heat of the Arizona desert, a raging fire pushes temperatures to a deadly degree,
and one woman is left to burn. Pulled naked and barely breathing from the fire, the victim has no idea who she is, let alone who would do this to her,
or why. In her hospital bed she drifts in and out of consciousness, her only means of communicating a blink of the eye. And then an angel appears.
Known around town as the “Angel of Death,” Sister Anselm has devoted her life to working as an advocate for unidentified patients. To her burn
patient, she is a savior. But to this Jane Doe’s would-be killer, Sister Anselm's efforts pose a serious threat. Ali Reynolds is on the scene as the new
media relations consultant for the Yavapai County Police Department, keeping reporters at bay and circumventing questions about arson and a link
to a domestic terrorist group called Earth Liberation Front. As Ali struggles to help Sister Anselm uncover the helpless woman’s identity, they realize
that by locating the missing relatives they may be exposing the victim once more to a remorseless killer determined to finish the job.

University of Utah writing professor Maximilian Werner visits with Black River Dreams, his collection of literary fly fishing essays that explores the intersection between past and present, spirit and body, water and land, ghosts and dreams. Werner is the winner of the 2008 Utah Arts Council's Original Writing Award for Nonfiction. Also tonight, Margaret Erhart, a river and hiking guide in the Grand Canyon, presents her novel, The Butterflies of the Grand Canyon. When Jane Merkle arrives in the tiny town of Flagstaff with her much older husband on a summer day in 1951, she has no idea that her life is about to change forever. But over a summer spent with her sister-in-law, Dotty, and Dotty’s lepidopterist husband in a village perched on the rim of the Grand Canyon, Jane discovers her ability with a butterfly net and her attraction to a handsome young ranger. Meanwhile, an unidentified skeleton is found on the premises of one of the village’s most cantankerous citizens. With the help -- and hindrance -- of a colorful cast of historical characters, the murder mystery that has haunted the town for years is solved. Erhart, a teacher of creative writing on the Navajo and Hopi reservations, has published essays in the New York Times and Christian Science Monitor, and her commentaries have appeared on National Public Radio.
The Lost Boys of Sudan were orphaned when government troops attacked villages in southern Sudan killing many of the inhabitants. The younger boys survived in large numbers because they were away tending herds or were able to escape into the nearby jungles.
Orphaned and with no support, the boys made epic journeys lasting years across the borders to international relief camps in Ethiopia and Kenya evading thirst, starvation, wild animals, insects, disease, and one of the most bloody wars of the 20th century.
The United Stated accepted 3,800 refuges for immigration and many settled in Arizona. Birth dates are not traditionally recorded in Southern Sudan, so many of the Lost Boys were given the birth date of January 1 when aid workers interviewed them in the 1990s.
Since 2005, Changing Hands has celebrated the Lost Boys with an annual Birthday Celebration. Yearly, our communities come together to discuss current events, happenings in the boys' lives and enjoy birthday treats.
The AZ Lost Boys will be on hand with their ceramic cows. The Lost Boys make cows out of clay then fire and glaze them to make a beautiful sculptures. All of the profits from the Cow Project go into a scholarship fund that is distributed directly to the Arizona Lost Boys and Girls every school semester.

Jeannette Walls’ memoir The Glass Castle was “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly). Now, in Half Broke Horses, she brings us the story of her grandmother, told in a first-person voice that is authentic, irresistible, and triumphant. “Those old cows knew trouble was coming before we did.” So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, Jeannette Walls's no nonsense, resourceful, and spectacularly compelling grandmother. By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town -- riding five hundred miles on her pony, alone, to get to her job. She learned to drive a car (“I loved cars even more than I loved horses. They didn’t need to be fed if they weren’t working, and they didn't leave big piles of manure all over the place.”) and fly a plane. With her husband, Jim, she ran a vast ranch in Arizona and raised two children, one of whom is Jeannette’s memorable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, unforgettably portrayed in The Glass Castle. Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy. She bristled at prejudice of all kinds -- against women, Native Americans, and anyone else who didn’t fit the mold. Rosemary Smith Walls always told Jeannette that she was like her grandmother, and in this true-life novel, Walls channels that kindred spirit.
Temple University professor Bryant Simon visits with his book, Everything but the Coffee: Learning About America from Starbucks, which looks beyond baristas, movie cameos, and Paul McCartney CDs to understand what Starbucks can tell us about America. Simon visited hundreds of Starbucks around the world to ask: Why did Starbucks take hold so quickly with consumers? What did it seem to provide beyond a decent cup of coffee? Why at the moment of Starbucks’ profit-generating peak did the company lose its way, leaving observers baffled about how it might regain its customers and cultural significance? Everything but the Coffee probes the company’s psychological, emotional, political, and sociological power to discover how Starbucks’ explosive success and rapid deflation exemplify American culture at this historical moment. Most importantly, it shows that Starbucks speaks to a deeply felt American need for predictability and class standing, community and authenticity, revealing that Starbucks’ appeal lies not in the product it sells but in the easily consumed identity it offers.
In her groundbreaking bestseller, Animals in Translation, Temple Grandin drew on her own experience with autism as well as her experience as an animal scientist to deliver extraordinary insights into how animals think, act, and feel. Tonight, she visits to build on those insights and show us how to give our animals the best and happiest life -- on their terms, not ours -- with Animals Make Us Human: Creating the Best Life for Animals. Knowing what causes animals physical pain is usually easy, but pinpointing emotional distress is much harder. Grandin identifies the core emotional needs of animals and explains how to fulfill the specific needs of dogs and cats, horses, farm animals, zoo animals, and even wildlife. Whether it’s how to make the healthiest environment for the dog you must leave alone most of the day, how to keep pigs from being bored, or how to know if the lion pacing in the zoo is miserable or just exercising, Grandin teaches us to challenge our assumptions about animal contentment and honor our bond with our fellow creatures.

KIDS
EVENT:
BILINGUAL STORYTIME 10:15AM
Kids Storytime (Spanish & English).
Sandra Mitchell, a professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh, visits with her book Unsimple Truths: Science, Complexity, and Policy. Birds form coherent patterns when they flock, major depressive disorder has some sort of genetic basis, the global climate is changing, but we can’t predict exactly how fast. What do these diverse things have in common? They are all complex, being made up of many parts interacting to generate the feature we attempt to explain. Mitchell explores these and other examples and argues that contemporary scientific explanation requires us to shift out of an old philosophical framework to accommodate emergence, dynamic causality and deep uncertainty. How we think about the world, how we investigate the world and how we act in the world must be revised to make sense of complexity.

R. DWAYNE BETTS: A QUESTION OF FREEDOM 7PM
R. Dwayne Betts visits with his memoir, A Question of Freedom, a coming-of-age story with
the unique twist that it takes place in prison. At sixteen, Betts, a good student from a lower-middle-class
family, carjacked a man with a friend. He had never held a gun before, but within a matter of minutes he’d
committed six felonies. In Virginia, carjacking is a “certifiable” offense, meaning Dwayne would be treated
as an adult under state law. A bright young kid weighing only 126 pounds -- not enough to fill out a medium
T-shirt -- he served his eight-year sentence in some of the worst prisons in the state. Utterly alone, Betts
was forced to confront profound questions about violence, freedom, crime, race, and the justice system.
Above all, A Question of Freedom is about a quest for identity, one that guarantees Dwayne’s survival
in a hostile environment and that incorporates an understanding of how his own past led to the moment of
his crime. More info: asu.edu/piper.

At the end of her bestselling memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe, a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship who'd been living in Indonesia when they met. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married. (Both were survivors of previous horrific divorces. Enough said.) But providence intervened one day in the form of the United States government which, after unexpectedly detaining Felipe at an American border crossing, gave the couple a choice: they could either get married, or Felipe would never be allowed to enter the country again. Having been effectively sentenced to wed, Gilbert tackled her fears of marriage by delving into this topic completely, trying with all her might to discover through historical research, interviews, and much personal reflection what this stubbornly enduring old institution actually is. Told with Gilbert's trademark wit, intelligence and compassion, Committed attempts to "turn on all the lights" when it comes to matrimony, frankly examining questions of compatibility, infatuation, fidelity, family tradition, social expectations, divorce risks and humbling responsibilities. Gilbert's memoir is ultimately a clear-eyed celebration of love with all the complexity and consequence that real love, in the real world, actually entails.

JONATHAN R. COLE: THE GREAT AMERICAN UNIVERSITY 7PM
Dr. Jonathan R. Cole, former provost of Columbia University, visits with his book, The Great American University: Its Rise to Prominence, Its Indispensible National Role, and Why It Must be Protected. From the development of technologies like the laser, the global positioning system, the MRI, radar, and even Viagra, to predicting weather patterns, American research universities are one of our most vital sources of economic growth and social welfare. They have flourished because of a system that has invested public tax dollars in their work and, more importantly, granted substantial autonomy to funding agencies and the universities. This system, Cole argues, is now under attack, the university’s preeminence endangered by the Patriot Act and other policies. This revelatory and alarming book will show how this vital institution is at risk, and why a threat to the university is a threat to the health and wealth of our nation.

ALLAN HAMILTON, MD: THE SCALPEL AND THE SOUL 7PM
Allan Hamilton, MD, visits with his book The Scalpel and the Soul: Encounters with Surgery, the
Supernatural, and the Healing Power of Hope. A Harvard-educated neurosurgeon, Hamilton reveals
his experiences, in and out of the operating room, with apparitions, angels, exorcism, after-death survival,
and the miracle of hope. He explores how premonition, superstition, hope, and faith not only become factors
in how patients feel but can change outcomes. It validates the spiritual manifestations physicians see every
day and empowers patients to voice their spiritual needs when they seek medical help. Finally, it addresses
the mysterious, attractive powers the soul exerts during life-threatening events. Hamilton has been a guest
on NPR, has appeared on the Discovery Channel and Anderson Cooper 360°, and has worked as a
consultant for “Grey’s Anatomy.” He attended Harvard Medical School and went on to become chief of
neurosurgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona Health Sciences
Center. He is currently a professor of neurosurgery and a clinical professor in the departments of Radiation
Oncology and Psychology at AHSC.
GABRIEL THOMPSON: WORKING IN THE SHADOWS 7PM
Award-winning investigative journalist Gabriel Thompson (There’s No José Here) visits with
his new book Working in the Shadows: A Year of Doing the Jobs (Most) Americans Won’t Do.
What’s it like to do the back-breaking work of immigrants? To find out, Thompson spent a year working
alongside Latino immigrants, who initially thought he was either crazy or an undercover immigration agent.
He stooped over lettuce fields in Arizona and worked the graveyard shift at a chicken slaughterhouse in rural
Alabama. He dodged taxis -- not always successfully -- as a bicycle delivery boy for an upscale Manhattan
restaurant, and was fired from a flower shop by a boss who he quickly realized was nuts. As one coworker
explained, “These jobs make you old quick.” Combining personal narrative with investigative reporting,
Thompson shines a light on the underside of the American economy, exposing harsh working conditions,
union busting, and lax government enforcement, while telling the stories of workers, undocumented
immigrants, and desperate U.S. citizens forced to live with chronic pain in the pursuit of minimum wage.

Take what you thought was “rock and roll excess,” double it, and you still wouldn't be anywhere near the dizzying life of Ozzy Osbourne. Born into a life so poor that the entire family slept in one room, music was his salvation, and his band, Black Sabbath, went on to change the musical landscape forever. The inevitable sex and drugs came along with the rock and roll lifestyle, and Ozzy soon fell into an epic relationship with booze and chemicals.
The stories of Ozzy’s days on the road are legendary -- biting the head off of a live bat, the tragic plane crash that took the life of his best friend and writing partner Randy Rhoads -- but few know about the real heartbreak he suffered during those days of hard living.
I Am Ozzy (Grand Central, $26.99) is the heavy metal pioneer’s unbelievable story told, for the first time, in Ozzy’s hilarious, witty, and inimitable voice. In the end it was love that saved him: the love of his wife Sharon and kids Aimee, Kelly, and Jack. Library Journal raves with a starred review, “Holding back nothing, this is horrific, fascinating, and often hilarious . . . the voice here is pure Ozzy . . . one of the most amazing rock autobiographies of all time.”
Book vouchers (required to attend signing) are available only at Changing Hands Bookstore. 480.730.0205.
Voucher is good for one copy of I Am Ozzy, redeemable on February 20 at the signing (through March 31, 2010).
Voucher is like cash and will not be refunded if lost, stolen, or unused. Due to time constraints, Ozzy will not pause for photos, personalize books or sign memorabilia (shirts, posters, CDs, guitars, etc.).
Show your ticket stub next door at Hoodlums Music for your chance to win one of two OZZY PRIZE PACKS and one of 20 gift cards from Hoodlums and Mac's Broiler & Tap.

CHRIS CLEAVE: LITTLE BEE 2PM
Novelist and Guardian columnist Chris Cleave, author of the international bestseller Incendiary, visits with his latest, Little Bee, a haunting novel about the tenuous friendship that blooms between two disparate strangers -- one an illegal Nigerian refugee, the other a recent widow from suburban London. According to the Washington Post, “Little Bee will blow you away. [Cleave] has carved two indelible characters whose choices in even the most straitened circumstances permit them dignity -- if they are willing to sacrifice for it. Little Bee is the best kind of political novel: You’re almost entirely unaware of its politics because the book doesn’t deal in abstractions but in human beings.”
SEATING begins one hour before the event. Lettered tickets (free with book purchase) will be called alphabetically to fill seats and will also be used to form the booksigning line. Each ticket is good for two seats. Seating opens to the general public fifteen minutes before the event, so please arrive early, as space is limited.

LYNN KLOTZ & ED SYLVESTER: BREEDING BIO INSECURITY 7PM
Pulitzer Prize nominated science journalist Ed Sylvester (The Gene Age) and Lynn Klotz, Senior Science
Fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, present their new book Breeding Bio
Insecurity: How U.S. Biodefense is Exporting Fear, Globalizing Risk, and Making Us All Less Secure.
Addressing a popular audience, they argue that the proliferation of high-biosecurity labs nationwide, at a cost
of billions, leaves us more open to deadly accidents or theft than we were before the lethal anthrax-letter
mailings following 9/11. They also recommend concrete actions for the administration, scientists, and all
Americans. An impassioned warning that never loses sight of political and scientific reality, Breeding Bio
Insecurity is a crucial first step toward meeting the evolving national security threats of the twenty-first
century.

to feel that way. There’s her gorgeous sister, Ashley, who barely acknowledges Melissa at school; her best
friend, Ryan, who may be falling in love with the sophisticated Courtney; and Melissa’s mother, who’s dating
someone she knows will never be able to replace her father. To make sure she doesn’t lose her father completely,
